FROM THE KOREAN PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION
16 representative Korean plays spanning from before liberation to the 1990s
Works that have consistently been loved for their outstanding literary and theatricality and have become milestones in the history of Korean drama.
Compiled and explained by Yang Seung-guk, a professor of Korean literature at Seoul National University and an authority on Korean drama research.
The essence of our dramatic literature
『Korean Plays』, a compilation of works that left a significant mark on the history of Korean plays from before liberation to the 1990s into two volumes of 8 plays each, for a total of 16 plays, was published as part of the Minumsa World Literature Collection. In the history of Korean drama that began after the Enlightenment period, many plays were created and performed as plays, but there are not many works that remain on stage and are consistently loved to this day. The plays included in 『Korean Plays』 can be said to be masterpieces that have survived for as long as eighty years or as short as twenty years based on their outstanding literary and theatricality.
▶ Plays depicting the landscape of modern Korean history from the 1930s to the 1990s
A total of 16 plays included in 『Korean Plays』 cover sixty years, starting with Song Young's "The Art of Self-Defense" (1932) and ending with Lee Kang-baek's "Diary of a Journey to Yeongwol" (1995), showing important turning points in modern Korean history one by one. In these works, the desires, dreams, loves, frustrations, and downfalls of all kinds of characters unfold against the background of a period of rapid change and confusion, from the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War to industrialization and modernization.
