Nexus marks Argent’s final album with the classic four‑piece lineup, and it shows the band stretching themselves in two distinct directions: Rod Argent’s expansive, synthesiser‑rich progressive compositions and Russ Ballard’s tighter, riff‑led hard‑rock songs. The result is a hybrid record that feels both ambitious and muscular.

Side A is the album’s progressive heart — a three‑part instrumental suite built around celestial themes, Mellotron swells, and recurring motifs. Tracks like “The Coming of Kohoutek” and “Infinite Wanderer” showcase Argent’s command of keyboards, shifting time signatures, and atmospheric layering. The centrepiece, “Music From the Spheres,” is an eight‑minute symphonic prog highlight, full of dramatic builds and cosmic textures.

Side B pivots into Ballard’s territory: punchy hard‑rockers with strong hooks, driving riffs, and more direct vocals. “Thunder and Lightning” and “Man for All Reasons” deliver classic early‑70s rock energy, while “Gonna Meet My Maker” closes the album with fiery guitar work that foreshadows Ballard’s departure.

Across the LP, the production is warm, the performances tight, and the contrast between prog grandeur and rock immediacy gives Nexus its distinctive character. Though commercially modest, it remains a cult favourite among progressive rock collectors.
