Bound in contemporary quarter calf and measures approx 21.3cm x 13.8cm x 1.3cm.As can be seen from the images the binding is very worn. The spine covering is torn and tatty, and split from top to bottom, thus, the rear board is almost detached, and hangs loosely by a small strip of leather. The extremities are rather worn, chipped and frayed and boards surface worn. Internally, there is the ink stamp of the Lawes Agricultural Trust, to the front and rear pastedowns, and to the top of the title page. There is a previous owner's inscription and various ink markings to the front pastedown. The front free endpaper is heavily creased. The first leaf of main text has a large portion lacking from the top corner, were presumably an ownership has been torn away, resulting in partial loss to the first 2 lines of text, see images. The contents have some toning, with some light scattered foxing in places, and the odd mark. The text block is starting to crack and stain to rear, thus the advertisement leaf to rear has come loose and is detached. Readable and complete.

This pioneering work examined different kinds of agricultural soil and considered which substances, such as dung, lime, marl, ashes, salts, and other mineral or organic materials, were most effective as manures for each, and goes on to explain their effects in terms of the composition and physical properties of the soil. An influential work that helped establish agricultural chemistry as a legitimate field of scientific inquiry.
