An unusual and highly decorative early 20th-century railway station gas pendant lamp, retaining its substantial brass three-burner arrangement and large white enamel reflector shade.

The reflector is marked in blue “THE SILVA LAMP”, identifying the particular lamp or lighting system. The construction is characteristic of the period when gas lighting was extensively used in railway stations and other large commercial and public buildings.

Rather than relying on a single flame, this example incorporates an impressive three-burner gas arrangement beneath the reflector. The large enamelled shade was designed to reflect and direct the light downwards, making this type of fitting particularly suitable for illuminating larger spaces such as station platforms and buildings.

The substantial brass suspension assembly above incorporates curved arms with rings and an adjustable mechanism, giving the fitting the wonderfully functional, engineered appearance associated with early railway and industrial equipment.

The combination of brass engineering, three gas burners and white enamel reflector makes this a particularly attractive survivor from the early gas-lighting era. The original lower glass globe associated with this type of fitting is not included; the sale comprises exactly what is shown in the photographs.

Good condition for its age with an attractive aged surface and would make an excellent restoration project, railway or industrial-lighting display piece, or candidate for sympathetic conversion into an electric pendant lamp.
