NIPPON was the prewar magazine that carried Japan's image to the world, printed in English, French, German and Spanish, and it remains one of the most striking things ever produced by Japanese graphic design. This third and final volume of the complete reprint brings you issues 29 through 36, bound together in a single accessible edition.
Turning these pages, you encounter bold layouts spread across oversized formats, fresh photography, and the work of writers of the first rank. Yonosuke Natori, Yusaku Kamekura, Ken Domon, Ayao Yamana, Takashi Kono and Ihei Kimura all contributed here, and the combination of their design and photography, printed with the finest technology available at the time, pushed Japanese graphic design and photographic expression forward by leaps. Natori's ambition was to make a magazine that could stand beside anything in Europe, and NIPPON is where that ambition arrived.
Alongside the regular issues, this volume includes one German-language edition and four Japanese-language editions. At the back you will find a complete table of contents for the entire run of NIPPON, a list of all contributors, and a roster of the staff of Nippon Kobo and Kokusai Hodo Kogei. Across 990 pages, it completes the three-volume set that began in December 2024.
