First edition of this ripping yarn, based on the author's experiences on board the Splendid of New Bedford, in whaling grounds off 'the Solanders, Vau Vau, South Pacific and Australian Gulf. "Bullen describes a violent cyclone at sea, gives extremely detailed accounts of the extraction of whale oil from blubber, and recounts the death-struggles between a whale and a giant squid. The book ranks next to Melville's Moby dick among the classics works on whaling" (Hill). Rudyard Kipling wrote of Bullen's tale: "It is immense, there is no other word. I've never read anything that equals it in its deep-sea wonder and mystery… It's a new world that you've opened the door to…". This is a fine copy in an attractive book-form slipcase. .
