History of Baltic Amber

Baltic amber is fossilised tree resin formed during the Eocene epoch, approximately 40 million years ago. Ancient forests covering northern Europe produced large quantities of resin, which was gradually buried and chemically transformed over millions of years into amber.

Amber has a particularly important connection with Latvia and the wider Baltic region. Archaeological evidence shows that amber was known and worked in the territory of Latvia from the Neolithic period. It became an important trade material and was exchanged over great distances. The Latvian National History Museum describes amber as one of the Baltic region’s historically most valuable export materials and an enduring part of Latvian culture and jewellery traditions.

Baltic amber is traditionally known as succinite, a name associated with its characteristic succinic-acid content.
