A striking Torpedo 18 from the 1950s, presented in an exceptionally attractive combination of soft blue-gray and silver, with elegant chrome details and a beautifully preserved mid-century appearance.

The Torpedo 18 is widely regarded as one of the outstanding German portable typewriters of its era. Torpedo had been producing typewriters in Frankfurt since the early 20th century, developing a reputation for precise engineering and exceptionally refined mechanisms. By the 1950s, the Torpedo 18 represented a mature expression of that tradition — substantial, elegant, and built as a serious writing instrument.

What makes the Torpedo 18 particularly memorable is its typing experience. The mechanism feels remarkably precise and controlled, with a smooth, confident action and the substantial character associated with high-quality German machines of this period. Its predominantly metal construction provides excellent stability on the desk, while its beautifully balanced proportions make it considerably more elegant than a typical office typewriter.

The design is equally impressive. The sculpted blue-gray ribbon cover, silver body, chrome trim, and matching keys create a sophisticated mid-century appearance that still looks remarkably modern today.

The original vintage metal ribbon spools have been preserved and remain with the machine — an important detail that adds to its originality and collector appeal.

Another particularly appealing feature is the original dealer label still preserved on the rear of the typewriter:

Hans Bergmann – Büromaschinen · Nähmaschinen · Fahrräder – Buchloe

This small surviving label gives the machine a tangible connection to its past, identifying the German business through which it was once sold or serviced. Details like this are increasingly difficult to find and give an individual vintage machine a history and character that cannot be reproduced.

The set is accompanied by its original Torpedo 18 booklet, original wooden cleaning brush, and period typing documentation shown in the photographs.

Condition:

Excellent. Shows normal signs of careful use (see photos). Fully functional. Professionally cleaned, serviced, adjusted, and thoroughly tested. A brand-new black/red ribbon has been installed, and the machine is ready for immediate use.

The original carrying case is included. The case shows damage and separation of the material around the zipper, as clearly visible in the photographs. The zipper itself remains intact and functional, and the retaining buckle inside the case also functions properly. Despite the cosmetic damage, the case continues to serve its purpose for storage and transport.
