The obverse features a shield with vertical stripes, crossed arrows below, and a scroll above reading IN GOD WE TRUST, flanked by sprigs of laurel and oak, with the date 1866 below the shield. The "WE" is worn down all the way.

The reverse displays a large numeral 2 above CENTS, encircled by a wheat wreath, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border.

The Two Cent Piece was struck for only ten years (1864-1873) and holds the distinction of being the first United States coin to bear the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, adopted during the Civil War era. It was discontinued as the nickel three-cent piece and Shield nickel took over its role in circulation.
