A beautifully preserved Olympia SM2 from the early 1950s, presented in a striking original cherry-red finish and complete with its original carrying case.

The Olympia SM2 is one of the great classics of German typewriter engineering. Produced during the early post-war period, it combines exceptionally robust all-metal construction with the precision, reliability, and beautifully controlled typing action that established Olympia as one of the world’s leading typewriter manufacturers.

Its rich cherry-red finish, elegant rounded body, chrome details, and contrasting keys give the machine an unmistakable mid-century character. More than seventy years later, the design remains remarkably elegant and immediately recognizable.

The typing experience is one of the reasons the SM2 remains so highly regarded. The keyboard is smooth and responsive, the mechanism feels precise and controlled, and the substantial metal construction provides excellent stability while writing.

In fact, it is my personal favorite ❤️.

The Olympia SM series also has an interesting connection to Woody Allen, who is famously associated with an Olympia portable typewriter and has continued using a mechanical typewriter for his writing. His long attachment to these machines has made the classic Olympia portable particularly recognizable among writers and film enthusiasts.

This particular example retains its original metal ribbon spools in a matching factory color — a beautiful and increasingly uncommon detail that adds considerably to its originality and collector appeal.

A fascinating piece of personal history was also discovered together with the machine: an original Deutsche Post telegram from 1965, addressed to a woman in Berlin-Lichtenberg.

This small surviving document offers a glimpse into everyday life in divided Germany and adds a wonderful historical dimension to the set. Preserved together with the typewriter decades later, it transforms the machine into something more than a beautifully restored writing instrument — a small time capsule carrying a tangible connection to its past.

The original telegram is included with the typewriter.
