Antique traditional Yemeni jambiya dagger complete with its decorated belt, scabbard and multiple suspended accessories.

This is an interesting ethnographic ensemble rather than an isolated dagger.

The jambiya has a broad curved double-edged steel blade with a pronounced raised central ridge. One side of the blade bears hand-engraved traditional motifs, including a six-pointed star / Seal of Solomon-type symbol and a stylized bifurcated sword motif resembling Zulfiqar.

The hilt is made of wood and is decorated with metal pinwork, ornamental bands and two old silver coins reused as decorative mounts. The coins are attached in the traditional manner and show considerable age and patina.

The dagger is fitted into a highly decorated curved scabbard with extensive applied white-metal ornament, wirework and stud decoration. The lower curved portion is leather-covered and terminates in a decorated metal fitting.

The wide woven belt has extensive metallic-thread decoration and retains a substantial group of traditional suspended accessories, including decorated containers and boxes. These appear to have served as personal storage, amulet or grooming-related accessories.

One of the suspended pieces is a large decorated filigree-style box. Additional smaller containers and fittings remain attached to the belt.

The white-metal fittings on the scabbard and accessories have been tested and do not test as silver. They appear to be a traditional white-colored non-ferrous alloy, possibly a nickel/copper-based alloy or similar traditional white metal. No silver content is claimed for these fittings.

The two coin mounts on the wooden hilt are silver-colored antique coins and appear to be genuine old silver coinage reused decoratively.

The blade and all components show genuine age-related wear and patina. The piece has not been restored or polished to a modern finish.

Based on construction, decoration and overall appearance, this ensemble appears to date approximately to the early to mid-20th century.
