Vintage Baltic Amber Necklace Large Cognac Pendant USSR Soviet Era Handmade Jewellery

Description:

Beautiful vintage Baltic amber necklace, most likely dating from the Soviet USSR period, featuring a substantial polished cognac-coloured amber pendant suspended from an unusual decorative metal chain.

The necklace has a distinctive handcrafted design. The central section is constructed from multiple interlinked metal rings creating a wide, textured collar, while the upper section changes to a conventional chain. Two smaller polished amber beads decorate the transition between the sections.

The focal point is the large polished amber pendant, with a deep cognac/orange colour and attractive internal variations visible through the translucent material.

The aged dark patina of the metal contrasts beautifully with the warm amber and gives the necklace a strong vintage character.

Baltic Amber & Soviet Jewellery History

Baltic amber originates from fossilised tree resin formed approximately 40–50 million years ago. The Baltic Sea region contains some of the world’s richest and historically most important amber deposits.

Amber has been collected and traded around Latvia and the eastern Baltic for thousands of years and became an important part of traditional Baltic jewellery and decorative arts.

During the Soviet period, Baltic amber continued to be widely used for jewellery. Workshops and individual craftsmen produced necklaces, brooches, bracelets and pendants combining polished amber with silver, base metals and other metal alloys. Designs ranged from traditional Baltic-inspired pieces to distinctive modernist jewellery typical of the mid-to-late 20th century.
