This set is complete, in excellent condition and belonged to Doctor John Gerard Stephens Holman (1894–1983). His card remains with the set. He was a member of the distinguished 'Holman' family line of medics. He qualified as a doctor (MRCS, LRCP) in 1917 from Middlesex Hospital, London and began his medical career during the First World War; a time when such diagnostic sets were essential for a physician's daily rounds. His education at Middlesex Hospital and as a member of a multi-generational medical family suggest these instruments were likely a centrepiece of his early practice.
The set was made by MILLIKIN & LAWLEY 67 & 68 Chandos Place, STRAND, W.C (London) and includes:
- Ophthalmoscope: The round, black disc with numbered lenses (often marked "+" and "-") is used to examine the interior of the eye.
- Otoscope: The cone-shaped heads are used for inspecting the ear canal and eardrum.
- Laryngeal Mirrors: The small, circular mirrors on angled metal stems are for viewing the throat and larynx.
- Nasal Speculum: A two-bladed attachment used to widen the nostrils for a nasal exam
- Nasal / Throat Long angled scissors
