A defining hard bop session from the Jazz Messengers' strongest early-60s lineup. Recorded in 1961 but held back for nearly a decade, Roots & Herbs finally surfaced in 1970 — six Wayne Shorter originals driven by Lee Morgan on trumpet, Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons and Walter Davis Jr. splitting piano duties. The playing is tight, urgent, and fully in command from the first bar.
This is an original first pressing on Blue Note Records, BST 84347.
Mastered at Van Gelder Studio, stamped in the deadwax on both sides.
Pressed during the Liberty Records era of Blue Note's history.

Cover art carries the psychedelic-lettered "Roots & Herbs" title treatment over Francis Wolff's photograph of Blakey at the kit, printed on a heavy black jacket with the red Blue Note "b" logo.

Original inner sleeve present.
Because the album sat unreleased for nine years before this pressing came out, this blue/white Liberty-label copy represents the earliest version of BST 84347 to exist — there is no earlier issue to be a repress of. Most copies encountered in the wild are the later black/turquoise Liberty UA variant; this blue/white label is the scarcer of the two.
