Bound in contemporary card covers, and measures approx 22.8cm x 14.6cm x 1.5cm. As can be seen from the images the binding is rather worn. Both the front and rear hinges are cracked and splitting, and thus both boards hang by a single thread and are almost detached. The boards are grubby and marked, and the extremities are bumped nicked and scuffed. The paper to spine is chipped and worn with loss. Internally, the pastedowns are a little dusty/browned. There is a presentation inscription from the author to the top of the front free endpaper and the front free endpaper has a couple of worn holes to the inner edge. The rear free endpaper is lacking. There is a little spot of worming to the top of the front pastedown and correspondingly to the top of the first few leaves. The deckled edges are naturally a little browned and thumbed more so to the frontispiece fore edge. The contents have the odd scattered rust spot or mark, there is a little light grubbiness, and the last few leaves to rear have a pale stain to the lower corners. The last leaf of text has a chip from the lower fore edge corner. Overall in reasonable bright and clean condition throughout. Complete.

There is a woodcut frontispiece and several woodcut illustrations in places throughout.

The presentation inscription to the front free endpaper reads -

First edition of this local history, by John B. Jefferson. It documents the history of the town and environs of Thirsk, in North Yorkshire. Its history, local legends, and detailed records of the surrounding region and villages like Topcliffe, and with accounts of local monastic ruins of Byland and Rievaulx Abbeys, as well as biographical sketches of prominent historical figures and eminent men, who lived in or influenced the the area.

Fascinating first edition, presented by the author, and printed locally in the town.
