Across 144 pages you follow a body of work built on patience. In his afterword, Sawada describes waiting for the wood in front of him to speak, and only then beginning to carve. What emerges are figures that resist easy description: not quite dolls, not quite offcuts, closer to presences than objects. The title, Tada Aru — roughly, "just being" — sums up the attitude behind them.
The book is in Japanese, but the work carries itself through the photographs, and you can spend time with these sculptures without reading a word. For anyone drawn to contemporary Japanese woodcarving, mingei sensibility, or the quieter end of sculpture, it rewards slow looking.
