STRIKING ANTIQUE ROYAL DOULTON “HIAWATHA” 8” BOWL — A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF EARLY ENGLISH POTTERY & LITERARY HISTORY

A wonderfully distinctive antique Royal Doulton England bowl featuring dramatic Native American imagery inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s celebrated The Song of Hiawatha.

The approximately 8-inch bowl is decorated with a commanding portrait of a Native American chief wearing a colorful feathered headdress. Around the upper border is a continuous scene of teepees, landscape and clouds, while illustrated scrolls carry memorable passages associated with the Hiawatha story, including:

“Wampum belts and strings and pouches”

and

“Never any deed of daring / But himself had done a bolder.”

The combination of the warm ivory ground, muted earth tones, colorful headdress and finely drawn encampment scenes gives this bowl tremendous early-20th-century character and display presence.

The underside bears the recognizable Royal Doulton England lion-and-crown backstamp, identifying it as genuine Royal Doulton production.

CONDITION
