Black & Decker 7980
Electric Drill Bit Sharpener
1/8"-3/8" Bits
TESTED AND WORKS
The
Black & Decker Model 7980 Drill Bit Sharpener is
a vintage, standalone bench tool from the 1970s and 1980s designed to automatically grind standard high-speed steel twist bits. Operating much like a heavy-duty electric pencil sharpener, it eliminates the guesswork of manual alignment by matching factory cutting angles.
Technical Specifications
- Capacity: Accepts 11 distinct bit sizes ranging from 1/8" to 3/8" in diameter.
- Motor: 2.0 Amp, 120-Volt motor operating at a fixed 3,000 RPM.
- Material Compatibility: Sharpens carbon steel and high-speed steel (HSS) twist drill bits. Do not attempt to use it on carbide-tipped or masonry bits, as it will ruin the internal grinding wheel
How to Use It
- Locate the Hole: Find the specific numbered slot on the top selector dial that matches your exact drill bit size.
- Align the Bit: Insert the dull bit into the slot. Twist it slightly until you feel the cutting lips drop into the alignment channels.
- Apply Light Pressure: Turn on the power switch. Push down with light, uniform pressure.
- Listen to the Grind: Let the internal wheel grind for a few seconds until the pitch of the motor changes, indicating the facet has been fully ground.
- Rotate: Pull the bit out, rotate it 180 degrees, and repeat the process for the second cutting lip to ensure an even split-point
