Thank you for viewing this listing.

This is a Japanese woodblock print reproducing Utagawa Hiroshige’s famous landscape “Awa, Naruto no Fuha” (The Whirlpools of Naruto in Awa Province), from the series “Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces” (Rokujuyoshu Meisho Zue).

The original design is by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), one of the most celebrated ukiyo-e landscape artists of the Edo period.

This work was produced as a traditional woodblock reprint by Unsodo, a long-established Japanese publisher.

The dramatic composition depicts the powerful currents and whirlpools of the Naruto Strait, surrounded by crashing waves and rocky formations. The deep blue gradations of the sea and the large spiral of water in the foreground create a particularly striking image.

■ Description

The original “Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces” series was created by Utagawa Hiroshige during the later years of his career.

This work is a later reproduction produced by Unsodo using traditional Japanese woodblock-printing techniques.

The design depicts the turbulent waters of the Naruto Strait in Awa Province, present-day Tokushima Prefecture.

Powerful waves, rocky formations, and the large whirlpool in the foreground dominate the vertical composition, while the distant landscape and birds create a strong sense of depth.

The reverse side of the print is also shown in the photographs.
