A fascinating antique French brass drum clock, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1870–1890.

The rounded brass case has a substantial carrying ring to the top and stands on small turned feet. It houses a mechanical key-wound movement marked “V.A.P. BREVETÉ S.G.D.G.”, identifying it with the French clockmaker and inventor Victor-Athanase Pierret.

The clock has a large original printed paper dial with bold Roman numerals, minute track and distinctive pierced steel hands. It is supplied with its original-style winding key.

Condition

The clock is in unrestored, as-found condition. The brass case is in excellent condition. The paper dial has age-related staining and wear clearly shown in the photographs.

The movement appears complete, but I have not tested the clock for timekeeping accuracy or duration over a long period so it is being sold as an antique clock which will probably require servicing 

A particularly interesting and unusual French clock with an identifiable maker’s mark and attractive late Victorian design.
