Roman Imperial – Gallienus – Silver Antoninianus – Cologne Mint (AD 257-258)

An impressive and military-themed silver antoninianus struck under Gallienus during his joint reign with his father Valerian I, issued at the mint of Cologne (Colonia Agrippina) between AD 257 and 258.

Reigning during the height of the chaotic Crisis of the Third Century, Gallienus was tasked with holding the vulnerable Rhine frontier against relentless barbarian incursions. Stationed personally in Gaul and the northern provinces, he won a series of vital battles against invading Germanic tribes (the Alamanni and Franks). To pay his legionaries and advertise his successes, Gallienus established a temporary military mint at Cologne and produced coinage proudly celebrating his VICT GERMANICA ("Germanic Victory").

• Reverse: Victory standing right upon a globe, holding a wreath in her right hand and a trophy over her left shoulder; to left and right at her feet, two seated and bound Germanic captives. VICT GERMANICA

Condition & References:

• Condition: Very Fine, rarer bust type. The reverse shows a soft strike on the face, but the coin possesses high silver quality. Please refer to photos for your own assessment.
