The reverse displays Johnson Matthey's highly recognizable repeating diagonal JM / crossed-hammers logo pattern that gives this variety its collector nickname, the "Hammer Back."

This particular example is from the later six-digit serial-number portion of the classic hammer-back production run.

JOHNSON MATTHEY HISTORY

Johnson Matthey is one of the most historically important names in precious-metal refining.

The company's roots date to 1817, and Johnson & Matthey became official assayers, melters and refiners to the Bank of England in 1852.

Johnson Matthey ultimately exited its gold and silver refining business in 2015, when those refining operations were acquired by Asahi.

Original Johnson Matthey bullion has consequently developed a strong following among collectors of vintage silver bars.
