Diocletian AE Follis Antioch AD 304-305

 

Obverse: IMP C DIOCLETIANVS PF AVG, laureate bust right

Reverse: GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI, Genius, wearing modius, nude, chlamys draped over left shoulder, standing left, pouring liquid from patera in right hand and holding cornucopia in left hand, S in right field

**VERY RARE, POSSIBLE 5th KNOWN WITH OFFICNA S**

This is the very LAST issue of this type for Diocletian from Antioch before his abdication in AD 305; according to OCRE, officina S should not exist for this type, however there is a known officina of ς that at times can resemble an S, but on the 5 known examples, including this specimen, the officina is quite clearly an S; the other 4 example are all in the collection of either the British Museum or the Ashmolean Museum respectively; the edges of this coin appear to have been hammered at some point in its life, whether for a type of gaming piece or perhaps for jewelry, but still quite rare and interesting!
