This is an outstanding piece of indigenous folk art imported from Tonala, Mexico. It’s an extraordinary Tastoane mask worn during the revered ceremonial fight that takes place every July 25th. The mask is made from leather and represents Santiago’s helper, “La Perra”. There is only one Perra in every ceremony which makes this mask especially collectible. It was made and danced by Ubaldo Macias Bernabé of Tonala. The painting and detail are phenomenal and the mask is substantial with a mass of hair made from ixtli fiber. Tastoanes represent the original tribal peoples who hid in local caves as the Spaniards approached. The yearly ritual battle re-enacts the introduction of Spaniards and Christianity into this area of Mexico. This mask measures approximately 12” in height, 13” in length by 10” in depth with the hair hanging 3’ below. The mask is signed and shipping in the U.S. will be $40.00.
