Condition report: map is overall in worse condition, was stored folded, shows fold lines, also shows tears and creasing especially on edges, in corners and in fold lines, shows yellowing and some stains, text part (booklet) is also in worse condition - especially paper cover, contents are overall in decent condition, complete with all pages, damage near binding
Historical context: Pharus-Plan was the brand name under which Pharus Verlag, founded in Berlin in 1902 by Cornelius Lowe, Eberhard Lowe, and Ernst Knaudt, published clear and concise city maps.
The name of the publishing house has its origins in the Pharos of Alexandria on the island of Pharos, one of the seven wonders of the world.
The lighthouse on the island of Pharos showed the sailors the way, similar to how a city map should show the way to the uninformed.
Perspective drawings of sights interspersed into the plans were a special feature and provided better orientation.
Pharus maps were produced for cities in Germany and other european countries.
They were also displayed as area maps in Berlin's S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations.
At the German Cities Exhibition in Dresden (1903), the publishing house received a silver medal for its technically outstanding city maps and was awarded a bronze medal in 1910 as part of its participation in the World's Fair in Brussels.
In the first years after the nazi regime came to power, the publishing business was booming.
At the end of World War Second, the production facilities were destroyed in an Allied air raid in 1945; some of the printing materials and cartography, as well as part of the archive, survived.
Production resumed after repairs following the war under soviet occupation.
In 1953, the Pharus-Plan publishing house was placed under the control of the East Berlin Treuhandanstalt (Trust Agency).
Although the Treuhandanstalt returned the company to its original shareholders in 1956, paper allocations and printing permits were denied.
Heinrich Moller then took the remaining documents to West Berlin and moved the publishing house to Berlin-Charlottenburg.
The publishing house was re-registered here in 1956, but publishing activities were initially suspended.
Publishing activities resumed in 1972, initially with illustrations for specialist books and commissioned cartographic work.
Reprint of the first Pharus map of Greater Berlin from 1905 was published to mark Berlin's 750th anniversary.
Following the political changes of 1989, the publishing house returned to one of its former production sites in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin.
At this time, Rolf Bernstengel joined the company, modernized production, and expanded its cartography offerings. The first publication was the Historical City Calendar of Brandenburg in 1993, immediately followed by an updated Pharus map of Potsdam with a comprehensive accompanying booklet.
Since then, the publishing house's product range has been systematically expanded.
In 1996, in cooperation with the Berlin Wall Museum, the Berlin city map 'Where the Wall Was' was produced in both german and english editions.
To mark the publishing house's centenary in 2002, partner Rolf Bernstengel acquired the entire company.
Pharus map was taken over by Jaron Verlag in 2024 (Wiki).
