How and Why Wonder Books were a series of illustrated books published in the 1960s and 1970s.  Produced and approved by noted authorities, the books were designed to teach selected nature, science and history topics to children, teenagers and young adults.  Overseen and edited by Paul F. Blackwood, a professional employee at the United States Office of Education, Washington, D.C. 48 pages total.  Original cost was 50 cents.

   The subject of this How & Why book is the United States Civil War.  It was published in 1961 - exactly one hundred (100) years after the start of the war between the states over slavery. Triggered by the election of Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln, Southern states seceded from the Union in conjunction with the taking of Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The book provides a broad overview of the events and influential individuals during the next four years, including Bull Run, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Gettysburg, Emancipation, Appomattox, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman.  Written by Earl Schenck Miers and illustrated by Leonard Vosburgh.  Published in 1961.  Number 5017 by Wonder Books, Inc., 1107 Broadway, New York, New York.

    I am neither a collector or grader of used books and magazines.  With this preface, this copy is in above average / good condition given its sixty four (64) years in age.   Shelf wear on spine, corners and edges of both covers. Bottom, lower spine evidences minor paper separation.  Minimal handling creases on covers. Clean.  No handwriting, highlighting, underlining, rips or tears.  All pages fully intact. Some browning of the interior pages consistent with age.   All in all a great bargain for any collector.
