Oliver Clare was a British Victorian still-life painter known for his highly detailed paintings of flowers, fruit, mossy banks and bird’s nests. He was the son of still-life artist George Clare and worked primarily in Birmingham.

This finely painted composition depicts a bird’s nest containing three blue-green eggs, surrounded by red, white and pink blossoms, leaves and scattered petals. The delicate treatment of the nest, flowers and eggs is characteristic of Clare’s naturalistic cabinet paintings.

CONDITION

The painting is in antique, as-found condition.

There is extensive age-related craquelure across the painted surface. The surface may also show accumulated dust, soiling, minor marks and aged or discolored varnish. No obvious major tear or large area of paint loss is visible in the supplied photographs; however, the painting has not been removed from the frame or examined under ultraviolet light.

The ornate frame is heavily distressed and has substantial losses to the molded decoration, particularly along the lower edge. It also shows cracks, chips, abrasions, worn gilding, exposed base material and evidence of older repairs. The backing materials, tape and hanging cord show age-related deterioration.

No glass or acrylic glazing is present. Oil paintings are commonly displayed without glazing.

Please examine all photographs carefully. They form an important part of the condition description. Professional inspection or stabilization is recommended if any lifting or active flaking of the paint layer is found before display.

COMMENT

A charming example of Oliver Clare’s best-known subject, combining flowers, a bird’s nest and brilliantly colored eggs within a dark woodland setting.

The three blue-green eggs form the visual focus of the composition, while the surrounding red, white and pink flowers create a vivid contrast against the dark background. Clare’s precise rendering of petals, leaves, nest fibers and small highlights gives this compact painting an exceptional degree of detail.

The imagery may be interpreted as a Victorian meditation on spring, new life, domesticity and the fleeting beauty of nature.

The attribution is based on the visible lower-right signature and the close relationship of the subject and technique to documented works by Oliver Clare. No separate certificate of authenticity or documented provenance is included.
