If you have ever picked up a movie pamphlet at a Japanese cinema, you already know they are something more than a program booklet. This is the first book to devote itself entirely to that world, and it hands you over 300 pamphlets reproduced in images, from classics like Roman Holiday to recent releases such as Kokuho, including the legendary editions collectors talk about.
The book takes you behind the scenes of how these booklets are actually made. You move from the editorial side — how writers and editors decide what goes into a pamphlet — to the design and printing side, with interviews and portfolio features covering designers working at the front line of the field today. Along the way you get the production stories that rarely leave the studio, plus a look at how devoted fans read and collect them.
A 128-page color gravure section, including the "pamphlet in full bloom" showcase, carries the visual weight, while later chapters trace the history of pamphlet culture in Japan and where it is heading. There is an appendix in which well-known figures name the three pamphlets of their lives, and an index so you can look up whether a particular title appears.
Compiled by PATU (Pamphlets Are the Universe), a volunteer group founded in 2018 to preserve and promote movie pamphlet culture through self-published zines, events, and pamphlet production of their own.
