Historical Context
Before motor oil was packaged in plastic bottles, it was commonly sold in round metal quart cans. Mechanics and service station attendants used reusable punch spouts like this one to pierce the can’s top and create a controlled pouring spout, reducing spills during oil changes. Japanese-made examples became common imports during the mid-20th century and are now collectible pieces of automobilia and gas & oil memorabilia.
