This extraordinary c1870 antique French marbled and marbleized paper comes from the former atelier stock of the celebrated Parisian publisher and bibliophile René Pincebourde ~ one of the great names connected to the golden age of French artistic bookbinding and decorative paper arts ~
Pincebourde’s legendary Librairie Richelieu in Paris became a meeting place for collectors, writers, engravers, artists, and bibliophiles during the Second Empire period. He worked alongside many important literary and artistic figures including Théophile Gautier and Charles Monselet and became renowned for luxurious illustrated editions and beautifully produced bindings using exceptional decorative papers such as these ~
This striking sheet has extraordinary movement with swirling cobalt blue, navy, powder blue, touches of rust red, golden ochre, smoky charcoal, and hints of slate flowing together in a wonderfully fluid marbled surface ~
The pattern feels wonderfully energetic and atmospheric ~ almost like waves, smoke, flowing currents, or stormy skies captured upon paper ~
These magnificent antique French papers were originally created for fine bookbinding, portfolios, stationery, endpapers, and decorative presentation work. Each sheet was made using traditional marbling techniques where pigments floated upon prepared baths before being skillfully manipulated by hand and transferred onto paper ~
