Antique Victorian CDV Boy Hunter with Rifle & Dog – Hinckley Geneva NY

Description

Offered is an exceptional original Victorian Carte de Visite (CDV) dating to approximately 1888–1893, featuring a young boy posed as a hunter beside his faithful hunting dog while holding a sporting rifle. Photographed by Hinckley of Geneva, New York, this is a remarkably well-composed studio portrait that captures the late Victorian fascination with youth, outdoor sports, and hunting traditions.

Unlike ordinary children’s CDVs, this image incorporates an elaborate theatrical studio setting complete with artificial rockwork, painted woodland backdrop, sporting rifle, broad-brimmed hat, and large hunting dog. Such elaborate sporting compositions were considerably more expensive to produce and survive today in far smaller numbers than standard studio portraits.

The young subject wears a fashionable late Victorian Norfolk-style jacket with oversized sailor collar, decorative bow tie, knee trousers, patterned stockings, and lace-up leather boots—an outfit typical of affluent American boys during the late 1880s.

The result is an outstanding portrait combining Victorian childhood, sporting Americana, and nineteenth-century photographic artistry.

Historical Significance

During the late nineteenth century, photography studios competed by offering elaborate themed portraits featuring props that reflected a family’s interests or aspirations. Hunting was viewed as a symbol of character, independence, and outdoor virtue, making sporting portraits especially desirable among prosperous families.

This image successfully combines several highly collectible themes:

* Victorian childhood
* Hunting and sporting memorabilia
* Antique firearms
* Dogs in photography
* Americana
* New York photographic history

CDVs depicting children with rifles and hunting dogs are encountered far less frequently than ordinary Victorian portraits.
