History

Meccano was invented by Frank Hornby in Liverpool, England, in 1901, originally under the name Mechanics Made Easy. It quickly became one of the world’s most famous engineering construction toys, teaching generations of children the principles of mechanics, engineering and design.

During the early 20th century, Meccano was manufactured both in the United Kingdom and, under licence and later by A.C. Gilbert, in the United States, where American manuals and model designs often differed from their British counterparts. Outfit numbers such as 00, 0, 1, 2 and larger engineering sets became highly collectible, and many manuals featured exclusive regional models.
