Two unique designs—one with a wooden door and one with a galvanised corrugated steel door, half covered with dirt and sandbags variations.
Shelters were typically dug half into the ground, with the material chucked on top or put into sandbags for added protection. Doors were custom built from anything available during wartime shortages. Access inside was either a ladder or footstool to step down inside.
3.6 Million of these were installed during WW2, still in place in some British gardens and farms today!
Standard World War II Anderson shelters were really quite small! , measuring just:
6.5 feet long, 4.5 feet wide, and 6 feet high! Whilst managing to fit a small family inside at a push!
