This outstanding Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) captures a deeply detailed, bustling street scene in Lafayette, New Jersey. The photograph is a treasure trove of early 20th-century Americana. On the left, a Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad steam locomotive is actively crossing the dirt road, with the engineer clearly visible in the cab window and "LACKAWANNA" stenciled across the coal tender.
On the right side of the road, a fantastic country agricultural store demands attention. Beneath a large painted "OATS." sign, the storefront is plastered with highly collectible vintage advertising signage, including clearly legible tin signs for "HAMMOND DAIRY FEED," "FAIRBANKS Standard SCALES," and "UNION GRAINS." The unposted reverse features a hand-captioned title and an AZO stamp box with two triangles pointing up and two pointing down, dating this photographic paper to between 1918 and 1930. The card is in excellent condition with sharp focus, great contrast, and minor corner wear.
The Sussex Branch of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W) passed directly through Lafayette, New Jersey. This vital rail line transformed the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, moving massive quantities of Sussex County milk and agricultural products to the New York metropolitan area, and bringing in heavy bulk goods like the "Union Grains" and "Hammond Dairy Feed" advertised on this very storefront.
