Rare Antique Doulton Burslem Embossed Two-Compartment Preserve / Condiment Server c.1895–1902

A genuinely scarce and highly unusual Doulton Burslem two-compartment serving vessel dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1895–1902.

Beautifully made, the body features moulded embossed decoration, richly enhanced with printed transfer decoration finished by hand, together with attractive hand-applied gilded highlights to the raised detail.

This combination of embossing, transfer printing, hand painting and gilding represents the quality decorative wares for which Doulton Burslem became renowned during the closing years of the nineteenth century.

The form itself is exceptionally unusual. Both compartments extend fully to the base, with one side formed as a pouring compartment while the handle-ended compartment curves neatly beneath it. This clever arrangement creates a natural recess allowing a serving spoon to sit comfortably beneath the pouring lip, suggesting the piece was intended for preserves, cream, sauces, chutneys or similar table accompaniments.

The underside bears the desirable Doulton Burslem backstamp, dating the piece to the period before, or around, the granting of the Royal Warrant in 1901, after which the factory adopted the Royal Doulton name. Decorative tablewares of this quality from the Doulton Burslem era are increasingly sought after, particularly uncommon serving forms such as this.
