• WWII Japanese Army Saegusa Unit Marching Flag Silk 70x100cm

A rare WWII-era Japanese Army marching flag associated with the Saegusa Unit (三枝部隊).

This is not a typical personal Japanese national flag with handwritten messages by family members or friends. Instead, this flag bears red seals associated with the Saegusa Unit, including the seal of the unit's adjutant, making it a particularly interesting historical military item.

The flag features handwritten Japanese calligraphy in black ink on the Hinomaru design.

In front of the inscription 「進軍」 (“March Forward”) is another red seal associated with the Saegusa Unit.

Below this are the following inscriptions and seal:

    「三枝部隊副官之印」
Seal of the Saegusa Unit Adjutant

    「為 三枝部隊勇士」

This may be translated as being presented to Saegusa Unit warrior/soldier

Based on its construction and the presence of the unit and adjutant seals, this appears to have been a unit-associated marching flag, rather than a privately made personal flag.

    Material & Construction

    • 100% silk
    • Approx. 70cm x 100cm (27.6 x 39.4in)
    • Two upper corners have cords with leather fasteners, apparently designed for attachment to an infantry rifle
    • Japanese national flag (Hinomaru) design
    • Handwritten military calligraphy and red unit seals

    Condition

The silk shows age-related discoloration, surface soiling, and wrinkles.

There are also a few small moth-eaten holes due to age. However, there are no major tears or significant damage, and the overall condition is considered good for its age.

Please carefully review all photographs for the exact condition, inscriptions, seals, and construction.

    Historical Significance

A particularly interesting and rare Japanese Army historical document/material bearing unit-related seals and inscriptions.

The presence of the Saegusa Unit markings and the adjutant's seal makes this substantially different from the many personal Hinomaru flags commonly found with handwritten farewell messages.

A fascinating piece for collectors of WWII Japanese military history, unit memorabilia, and Japanese military flags.
