Georgian Mourning Bracelet
A deeply personal and touching piece of Georgian mourning jewellery, this baby mourning bracelet is fashioned from finely woven dark brown hair of possibly the baby's mother, carefully plaited into a broad and substantial band.
Such pieces were created as treasured memorials, often using the hair of a deceased loved one, providing a tangible and intimate remembrance during a period when mourning customs were an important part of family life.
The bracelet is fitted with a warm gold clasp, engraved internally with the date 8th March 1840, commemorating a significant event, most likely the passing of the mother, or the date the piece was commissioned. The woven hairwork remains remarkably well preserved for its age, displaying the extraordinary craftsmanship for which these sentimental pieces are admired.
