The second (and much expanded) edition of John M'Leod's famous account. M'Leod was the surgeon aboard the Alceste under Captain Murray Maxwell, the vessel which accompanied Lord Amherst’s embassy to China in 1816. Part of its voyage included surveying the Chinese and Korean coasts, visiting the Ryukyu Islands (known then as Lewchew or Loo Choo), and suffering shipwreck and plunder by Malay pirates on the return voyage. With the expanded appendices and the plate of ‘Fort Maxwell’ not included in the first edition.
22 x 14 cm. viii + 323 pp + etched portrait frontispiece + 5 hand-coloured aquatint plates. Contemporary brown calf, gilt decorated spine with morocco label.
Very good condition. Leather a little worn on the edges. Some mild foxing throughout. Previous owner’s name on the front pastedown. Binding firm, all plates present.
