This is a fantastic vintage original animation production art which features Rick Rack from one of the 1940's Tele-Comics syndicated TV Shows. The image of Rick Rack is centered on the paper and is done in ink and watercolor. In the upper left corner on the back you can see the "STRATHMORE" watermark. The piece was produced with the image of Rick on both sides, so it could be used again as the character faces the opposite direction.
The 1949 show, Tele-Comics, was syndicated by Vallee-Video as a 15-minute show made up of four three-minute segments: Joey and Jug, Sa-Lah, Brother Goose, and Rick Rack, Secret Agent.
This piece is on stiff "Strathmore" art paper with India ink/watercolor art showing Rick Rack. The piece comes with the matching layout sheets done in pencil. Rick Rack was a Dick Tracy/Jim Hardy-inspired character.
The piece has scattered extensive staining and wear along top to the layout sheet.
Along with "Crusader Rabbit," Telecomics was the first animated series expressly made for television, running from 1949-1951. At that time animated cartoons were not really animated, but they showed still pictures with voice-overs.
Animation drawings are usually rendered in graphite and/or colored pencil on paper, drawings illustrate an animator's creative process of bringing characters to life. Many collectors prefer drawings to cels, because they are often more spontaneous and full of life, and they are more likely to be the work of a lead animator.
