The Whitefriars Glassworks was established in London in
1680, on part of the site of the Carmelite Monastery, which from 1247 to 1538
sprawled across the area between The Fleet and the Thames. In 1834 James Powell purchased the glassworks
and so it began. By 1844 he was making
stained glass with Edward Burne-Jones and the new Arts and Crafts thinking.
This forward thinking ethos stayed with Whitefriars through a relocation to
Wealdstone (though they incorporated Whitefriars into the official company name)
into the 20th century; and in 1950 Geoffrey Baxter joined the design team. Again, they were at the forefront of art
thinking and Geoffrey’s moulded art glass pieces became the pinnacle of
Whitefriars production and are now highly sought after. Unfortunately, after 300 years of continuous
glassmaking, global marketing and production changes forced them to close in
1980. If they had not, where would they
have gone next. This is a classic
kingfisher blue Nailhead Vase, standing 17cm tall and 4.5cm in diameter. I have compared its construction with the others on the market and advertise this as in
perfect condition.
