Masajiro “Mike” Kawato served as a fighter pilot in the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service during World War II and flew the legendary Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter aircraft. He is credited with 19 aerial victories, making him one of Japan’s recognized World War II fighter aces.

Kawato is widely known for his claim that he was the pilot who shot down legendary United States Marine Corps ace Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, commander of the famous VMF-214 “Black Sheep Squadron,” during the air battle over Rabaul on January 3, 1944. Although historians continue to debate whether Kawato personally fired the decisive shots, he participated in the engagement and remains closely connected to one of the Pacific Theater’s most famous aerial battles.

Following the war, Kawato immigrated to the United States, became active in aviation history circles, authored his memoir Flight Into Conquest (also published as Bye Bye Black Sheep), and later met Gregory Boyington. Their post-war friendship became a remarkable symbol of reconciliation between former wartime enemies.
