VW Bay Window Crewcab You are looking at my 1977 bay window LHD German crewcab. In spite of its hard earned dents in its life as a workhorse, this bus has remained particularly solid. It still retains its original front panel which is rock solid at the pillars and along the screen bottom, which usually rot out on buses. It was a shame to cut away good steel for the sake of a dent or two, so that set the patina theme for the bus. It was bare-metalled, primed and then all dented areas were pre-painted with a darker groundcoat to rub through to rather than dent pull/ fill. Hence minimal bodyfiller has been used in the prep. It had been painted metallic green but has been returned to its factory colour of L345 light grey. In keeping with the German workhorse theme, It has been patina signwritten as a builder's truck. The underside has had some non standard panels put in over the years, as have many buses. All four outriggers and jacking points have been replaced with 2x2 box section (I have lifted the bus on the front riggers) , the rear central crossmember has had a portion cut out of it and a section of 1" box let back in, this appears to be clearancing where a radiator or oil cooler was once fitted. The cab floor appears original and in very good condition with a small repair on each side. Cab doors are very good. Front panel, deformation panel and lower inner front valance all good condition. Both sills have been repaired in the past. The floorpan between the front and rear crossmember and the cab floor has again in the past been replaced with sheet steel, It was my intention to go through this properly with correct panels, a bit at a time so as to keep it on the road. However, circumstances have changed and sadly it now needs to go. Nothing is irrepairable, crewcabs are obviously becoming rare as the vast majority of them led a hard life. The load bed has an additional steel engine hatch modification from a t25, which makes engine access/ servicing far easier. It also makes easy the possibility of an alternative engine installation. This bus had at some point run a watercooled engine but is now running an AB code 1300 twinport, which is 6 HP less than the 1600 engine. Whilst it's no Ferrari, this pulls the cab along nicely. It has been serviced and treated to a new starter motor, alternator, fuel pump, plugs, points, HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm. It has an EMPI header and Kawasaki Ninja stainless silencer. The interior is the original which has been professionally re-trimmed in the past and is in great condition. The door cards, bulkhead panel and kick panels are re-covered in coffee sacks, rat look style. There are 6 seats and 6 belts; 4 inertia reel belts and the two middle ones are lap belts. I have regularly used this for the school run with our three kids and they love it! It never fails to attract attention; ninety five percent smiles and points and five percent looks of confusion! The load bed is incredibly handy- I have carried 6x4' fence panels from B&Q on the way back from the school run, a 2 man tent, and it's the transport of choice for ferrying mates around shows!
