History

This cabinet photograph was produced by the studio of N. D. Zenin in Egoryevsk, a historic textile and trading town southeast of Moscow. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, photographers printed their studio name and services on the reverse of cabinet cards, which today help identify both the maker and approximate age.

Portraits of soldiers and their families were especially popular before the First World War, often commissioned before military service or during leave. These photographs served as treasured keepsakes and many survived the dramatic events of the Russian Revolution, Civil War and the collapse of the Russian Empire.
