Vintage Argentine Silver and Gold Scenic Verijero Gaucho Knife by La Movediza, circa 1942–1963
Offered here is a rare Argentine gaucho knife of the verijero type, made by La Movediza, Industria Argentina.
The blade is marked LA MOVEDIZA – IND. ARG., allowing the knife to be dated approximately to the 1942–1963 production period of the La Movediza factory.
This knife is a richly decorated example of Argentine criollo silverwork, known as platería criolla. The hilt and scabbard are made of silver and are decorated with numerous applied gold elements. The gold elements are not simple gilding; they are separate applied decorative pieces.
The knife features an unusually elaborate scenic decorative program.
One side of the scabbard depicts:
- Estancia or rural ranch house
- Water well
- Seated gaucho playing guitar
- Dancing couple
- Traditional guitar
- Miniature knife motif
The opposite side depicts:
- Grazing horse
- Wagon
- Wagon wheel
- Gaucho figure
- Horse head
The decoration is executed in traditional Argentine style and relates directly to gaucho life, rural culture and the imagery of the pampas.
The hilt has a gold cartouche engraved with the monogram RP, presumably the initials of the original owner or recipient.
The scabbard also has a separate raised oval gold plaque bearing the letters USV.
This USV plaque was made separately and applied to the scabbard. Because of its construction, it may represent the emblem of an organization, society, institution or group for which the knife was specially commissioned. The exact meaning of USV has not yet been documented, so this remains a research-based hypothesis.
Based on the overall construction, extensive use of gold appliqués, richly developed scenic decoration, engraved owner’s monogram and separately fabricated gold USV emblem, this knife appears to differ substantially from standard production examples of La Movediza. These characteristics suggest it may have been produced as a special commission or presentation piece. While this interpretation is supported by the construction and design of the knife, it has not yet been documented and should therefore be regarded as a research-based hypothesis rather than an established fact.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition.
The silver retains a natural aged patina. The blade shows age-related wear, scattered spotting and surface marks consistent with age. The gold decorative elements remain present and attached. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are part of the description.
