Brief History of VEF

VEF (Valsts Elektrotehniskā Fabrika – State Electrotechnical Factory) was founded in 1919 in Riga, Latvia and became one of the largest electronics manufacturers in the Baltic region. During the interwar years, VEF gained an international reputation for producing high-quality radios, telephones, cameras, and the famous VEF Minox miniature camera.

After Latvia was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940, VEF became one of the USSR’s leading electronics factories. It manufactured millions of telephones, radios, electrical components, military communications equipment, and other electronic products exported throughout the Soviet Union and to many foreign countries. Original VEF memorabilia and presentation items are now sought after by collectors of Latvian industrial history and Soviet technology.
