Ganzseitige Miniatur in Gold und Farben aus einem gedruckten Stundenbuch auf Pergament aus der renommierten Druckerei von Simon Vostre.

Die Oktavserie der Pichore-Werkstatt für Simon Vostre bezeichnet einen berühmten Zyklus von Metallschnitten, den die Werkstatt des Pariser Buchmalers und Verlegers Jean Pichore (zusammen mit Remy de Laistre) ab 1504/1505 für den Verleger Simon Vostre schuf. Diese detailreichen Illustrationen wurden speziell für Vostres gedruckte Stundenbücher im Oktavformat entworfen.

Die Illustration zeigt den Bethlehemischen Kindermord unter König Herodes, der mittig auf seinem Thron sitzend die Mütter mit ihren Knaben um sich versammelt hat.

So heißt es im zweiten Kapitel des Matthäusevangeliums, dass sich Herodes aufgrund der Geburt Jesu um seinen Thron bedroht fühlt und daher alle männlichen Nachkommen im Alter von bis zu 2 Jahren töten lässt. Durch die Warnung der Sterndeuter (Heilige Drei Könige) verlassen Josef und Maria mit dem Jesusknaben Bethlehem, fliehen nach Ägypten und entkommen somit Herodes´ tödlichem Schwert.

Das Stundenbuch, auch Horarium oder Livre d’heures war ein im Aufbau dem Brevier der römisch-katholischen Kirche nachempfundenes Gebet- und Andachtsbuch für das Stundengebet. Stundenbücher waren zunächst für Laien bestimmt, später auch für Kleriker. Sie kamen Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts in England auf und verdrängten den Psalter aus seiner beherrschenden Rolle als Gebetbuch. Im Spätmittelalter waren sie in Kreisen des reichen, lesekundigen Adels und Stadtadels das private Andachtsbuch par excellence. Der Buchtyp erlebte seine verbreitungsmäßige und künstlerische Blütezeit im späten 14. und im 15. Jahrhundert in Frankreich und Flandern. Später kamen sie über die Niederlande auch in das deutschsprachige Gebiet.

Ganzseitige Miniatur in Gold und Farben in ornamentaler Bordüre, darin eingefasst zwei Textzeilen mit einer zwei- und einer einzeiligen Initiale in Gold und Farben.

Verso ist das Blatt mit einer mehrteiligen unkolorierten Metallschnitt-Bordüre mit Bibelszenen ausgestattet.

23 Zeilen, blassrot regliert und mit einzeiligen sowie einer mehrzeiligen farbigen goldgehöhten Initialen im Text versehen.

Blatt: 17,7 x 11,3 cm; Miniatur: 16,5 x 11 cm; Text: 15 x 9 cm.

Ausgezeichneter Originalzustand, sehr gute Erhaltung. Blatt in den Rändern pergamentbedingt minimal gebräunt. Eingesteckt in Folie, diese aufgebracht in dekorativem Schutzkarton.

DESCRIPTION

Full-page miniature in gold and colours from a printed book of hours on parchment from the renowned printing house of Simon Vostre.

The octavo series by the Pichore workshop for Simon Vostre refers to a famous cycle of metal engravings created by the workshop of the Parisian illuminator and publisher Jean Pichore (together with Remy de Laistre) from 1504/1505 onwards for the publisher Simon Vostre. These richly detailed illustrations were designed specifically for Vostre’s octavo-format printed books of hours.

The illustration depicts the Massacre of the Innocents under King Herod, who is seated in the centre on his throne, with the mothers and their boys gathered around him.

The second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew states that Herod felt his throne threatened by the birth of Jesus and therefore ordered the killing of all male children up to the age of two. Following the warning from the Magi (the Three Kings), Joseph and Mary left Bethlehem with the infant Jesus, fled to Egypt and thus escaped Herod’s deadly sword.

The Book of Hours, also known as the Horarium or Livre d’heures, was a book of prayers and devotions for the Liturgy of the Hours, modelled on the structure of the Roman Catholic Church’s Breviary. Books of Hours were initially intended for laypeople, and later also for clerics. They emerged in England in the mid-13th century and supplanted the Psalter in its dominant role as a prayer book. In the late Middle Ages, they were the private devotional book par excellence among the wealthy, literate nobility and the urban gentry. This type of book experienced its heyday in terms of both popularity and artistic quality in the late 14th and 15th centuries in France and Flanders. Later, they also reached German-speaking regions via the Netherlands.

On the verso, the leaf features a multi-part uncoloured metal-cut border depicting biblical scenes.

23 lines, ruled in pale red and featuring single-line and a multi-line coloured initials raised in gold within the text.

Leaf: 17.7 x 11.3 cm; miniature: 16.5 x 11 cm; text: 15 x 9 cm.

Excellent original condition, very well preserved. The page is minimally browned at the edges due to the parchment. Mounted in plastic, which is set in a decorative protective cardboard slipcase.

The miniature painting has perfect colour retention.
