1697

First edition

A rare little work, the binding of which, as can be seen from the images, is rather worn. Bound in full contemporary calf and measures approx 16.3cm x 10.3cm x 2.3cm. The top board is detached. The boards are surface worn and scuffed with small areas of surface loss. The extremities are bumped and chipped with small loss to corners and the top and bottom edges of spine, with headbands lacking. Internally, there are marbled endpapers to the front and rear. The front free endpaper remains attached to the detached front board and thus is separated from the main body. The front free endpaper has a number to the top edge and there is a large previous owner's paper label to the front pastedown. The blanks are a little browned/foxed/grubby. The title page is a little worn to the edges, a little browned and grubby and has some light pencil smudging. The contents have light toning and a little scattered foxing throughout. There are a few scattered browned spots, the odd light grubby marks, and a few scattered small margin stains. The text block is starting to crack and strain a little in places. There is a little creasing and thumbing. Readable and complete.

[12], 3-180 p. Complete.

Anonymous French work translated by English historian John Savage. A rare work considered a piece of political exposé and propaganda, concerning the Nine Years' War (also known as the War of the Grand Alliance, 1688–1697), aiming to expose the "foul play" and political betrayal of Victor Amadeus II, the Duke of Savoy. Savoy was originally part of the Grand Alliance (which included England, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire) fighting against the expansionist France under King Louis XIV. It provided documentation and 'authentick proofs' showing that the Duke was secretly negotiating with the French King, while he was officially allied with England and other European powers. It details the 1696 Treaty of Turin, where Savoy made a separate peace with France. A scarce work providing a scandalous account of how a key ally abandoned the Grand Alliance for regional gain.

Scarce.
