Seldom Seen Collectable 1820 Circular Caroline Queen of England Horn Snuff Box

This is a Regency period slim pressed circular pocket snuff box that dates to around 1820. The top has a bust portrait titled CAROLINE QUEEN OF ENGLAND; the underside has an engine-turned decoration of central chrysanthemum flower, weave pattern and an outer ring of thistles. The top has the embossed maker’s name WILSON SHEFFIELD (not picked up by the camera). The queen was famed for her scandal filled life and was the estranged wife of George IV.

It is made from pieces of cow or ox horn, split and flattened by heated steam. Wilson & Co operated as a master horn turner and pressed-horn manufacturer in Sheffield during the late Georgian and Regency eras (circa 1790s–1830s).

It is in good near antique condition with aged crazing, horn splits and cracks with small chips; these don’t detract but only define the inherent nature of the material and its age; and warm antique patina. The images show the condition far better than we can detail, please study these carefully; they are part of the description and condition report.
