A vibrant and characterful African art piece, likely from an artist working within or associated with the celebrated Poto-Poto School tradition of Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.
The Poto-Poto School was founded in 1951 and is one of the first and most renowned painting schools in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is famous for its distinctive style of expressive, stylised figurative work depicting scenes of everyday African life — and this print is a wonderful example of that tradition. The work depicts four lively figures dancing around a central palm tree, dressed in traditional costume with bold colours of red, yellow, green and blue, and decorative baskets balanced on their heads. The figures are rendered in the characteristic Poto-Poto manner: simplified, fluid black outlines full of movement and energy, set against a warm kraft-toned background.
It has been professionally mounted and framed by Eduardo Allesandro Studios, Broughty Ferry, Dundee and is presented in a classic black wood frame with a cream mount, ready to hang straight away.
