However, there is a surprising backstory to the creation of this pattern.
It was in the late 1860s. There was a count in Hungary named Apponyi who suddenly found himself having to host an important party and urgently needed a new dinner set for his guests. Perhaps he was a somewhat forceful lord, as he pressured Herend to quickly create a new pattern. The story goes that Herend, in a pinch, quickly came up with a simplified version using a part of the "Indian Flowers" pattern, and the Count accepted it. Neither the client nor the maker could have imagined at the time that this hastily put-together pattern would later become a worldwide bestseller.
